Chinese export porcelain dinner plate decorated in translucent enamels of the famille verte (wucai) palette and in opaque enamels from the famille rose (fencai) palette (rose-verte) with a European ship and a pilot’s Chinese junk, base with shop mark in under-glaze cobalt blue (qinghua), c. 1725, Yongzheng reign, Qing dynasty, d. 21 cm, 8¼ in. 6.12068

This plate shows the Europeans’ first view of Chinese land at the mouth of Pearl River while waiting for the pilot to take them up in the river to Guanzhong (Canton). A similar but more elaborate view is known in reverse glass and oil paintings mainly from the 19th century.
